Members take monthly turns planning visits to Churches and Cathedrals in and around London. Started January 2026. If you have an interest in history, architecture, art, sculpture, sociology and culture this group is for you.
St Martins-in-the-Field and The National Gallery Inclement weather forced the group to change plans to visit Lesnes Abbey but we all enjoyed the serenity and simplicity of St Martins-in-the-Field, a church we pass so often in London. It is in fact the King's parish church, built in the 1700s and supports the local community in so many ways. After lunch in the crypt we visited the National Gallery - viewing the vast collection of religious art in the Sainsbury Wing.
August outing : Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral & All Saints Church, Margaret St.
This month the group enjoyed two visits in a day - one to the Romanesque-style Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral near Bond Street. Its interiors are extraordinary with luxurious golden icons in the Byzantine style. A young trainee priest called Bohdan gave us a detailed history of the faith and history of the building.
After lunch in John Lewis we went onto the second venue: the Victorian Gothic styled All Saints Church, Margaret Street near Oxford Circus. Some members even added a little shopping therapy at the end of the day! There’s nothing like a good day out….! Arthur Maxted
